Helping Small Businesses Empower, Innovate, and Succeed Across TennesseeTENNESSEE SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTERANNUAL SUMMARYA Partnership of Middle Tennessee State University and the U.S. Small Business Administration Greetings from the GovernorJanuary 19, 2017 Sincerely,Bill HaslamDear Friends:I am pleased to recognize the Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC) program headquartered at Middle Tennessee State University. This organization continues to contribute to the development and growth of our small and medium-sized businesses. Small businesses in Tennessee represent the majority of businesses in our state and are driving our economic growth. We continue to see positive signs of economic recovery throughout Tennessee. I also recognize the TSBDC’s collaborative efforts within the Tennessee Board of Regents, our institutions of higher education, the business community, volunteers, and the U.S. Small Business Administration. As governor, my priority is making Tennessee the #1 state in the Southeast for high-quality jobs. As a part of my plan to bring these jobs to Tennessee, I am working to improve our education system, manage our budget conservatively, and implement regional economic development strategies that leverage each region’s existing assets.Four years ago, our administration doubled down on our efforts to improve the readiness and quality of Tennessee’s workforce through the Drive to 55 Initiative. The Drive to 55 is a mission to see that 55% of Tennesseans have a postsecondary credential by 2025. The mission is critical given that at least 55% of jobs in Tennessee will require training beyond the high school level in the next decade. Currently, around 33% of Tennesseans hold at least a two-year degree, which ranks Tennessee 42nd when compared to other state’s educational attainment levels. To reach our Drive to 55 goals and prepare Tennesseans for a competitive 21st-century economy, we are working to create a more seamless pathway between high school, postsecondary education and training, and the workforce. The development and growth of the Tennessee businesses proled in this report exemplies the economic recovery experienced by many small businesses that the TSBDC has assisted over the past year. I congratulate the business owners featured in this report for investing in their businesses and employees.4America’s Small Business Development Center Network• A new job is created in the U.S. by an SBDC client every 5 minutes.• A new business is opened by an SBDC client every 30 minutes.• $100,000 in new sales are generated by SBDC clients every 7.5 minutes.• $100,000 in financing is obtained by SBDC clients every 11.4 minutes.Calculation of Savings in State Unemployment Benefits Offset Through TSBDC Business Development and Job Creation Activities (2008–16)SBDC Economic Impact isClient-Verified14.96weeks10,525jobs created9,501jobs retained(12 Month Moving Average from January 1, 2008 to September 30, 2016)SOURCE: TSBDC CIC (Client Verified Data)Calculation for state dollars saved based upon the following formula: = (Avg.
